Cuyabeno Reserve Tour Itinerary: 4 Days and 3 Nights of Adventure

DAY 1

Quito- El Puente (bridge)

(Bus trip one day before - eight hours of travel to the Cuyabeno Bridge -)

Our tourist services begin and end at the Cuyabeno River Bridge. From this point, after making our registration to enter the reserve, we embark on the motorized canoe that will take us downstream to our camp (approximate time three hours), while our guides give lectures about the area’s flora and fauna. Arrive at Canangueno Lodge to relax before dinner and a night walk.

DAY 2

Rio Cuyabeno

After breakfast, we will visit the Siona Secoya Community of Tarapuy accompanied by our guides that will explain the cultures and traditions. Additionally, there will be a demonstration of the making of earrings, necklaces, shigras (woven bags), and cassaye (yuca bread).

In the afternoon, we will enjoy the magic of nature by the Cuyabeno River listening to bird calls, monkeys, and- with a little luck- catch a glimpse of pink dolphins and much more.

DAY 3

Rio Cuyabeno

After breakfast we will embark on a motorized canoe and will visit the large lagoon where we will walk through the main forest. Our guides will talk about the flora and fauna here, along with the various uses of medicinal plants. We will then enjoy an evening at the Horizante de Cuyabeno before returning to the Lodge at night to observe the alligators.

DAY 4

Rio Cuyabeno

Enjoy animal watching at 6:00am by the Cuyabeno River before returning for breakfast. Depart from the Lodge at 9:30am to el Puente (Arrive at Lago Agrio at 4:00pm) and take a bus or plane back to Quito.

P.S. There is a private transport that leaves from la Mariscal (QUITO) to the Cuyabeno river bridge, its cost only one way is USD 30.00 per person, with return it would be USD 60.00. Middlearth travel can help you coordinate this transportation or do it on your own.

How do I get to Cuyabeno from Quito?

Most travelers take an overnight bus or a shared/private shuttle to the Cuyabeno River Bridge (El Puente). From there, the lodge's motorized canoe transfers you to the camp. We'll assist you with contacts for reliable transportation options and help coordinate your arrival time at the bridge.

What's included in the tour?

Guided activities, canoe transport within the reserve, bilingual naturalist guide, lodging with private bathroom, meals during the tour, and electricity for charging devices.

What's not included?

Transport Quito–Cuyabeno Bridge–Quito, reserve entry fee (if applicable), community activity contributions, drinks not listed, meals before/after the tour, and tips.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

Common sightings include pink river dolphins (seasonal/luck-dependent), several monkey species, hoatzin, toucans/aracaris, caimans, and countless insects. Anacondas and sloths are possible but never guaranteed.

What should I pack?

Light long sleeves and trousers, shorts, T-shirts, comfortable shoes/sandals, rain jacket, hat, swimwear, small waterproof daypack, insect repellent, sunscreen, flashlight with extra batteries, personal meds/first-aid, and passport.
